Handmade Cotton Futon Mattresses
A futon mattress does more than one thing, and that’s the point. Whether it’s on a frame in a living room that doubles as a guest bed, in a kid’s room on a bunk, or used as your primary sleeper, the construction is the same throughout: alternating layers of raw cotton batting and high-density
foam, wrapped in wool for natural fire protection, and handmade in our Delta, BC factory since 1985.
Every futon mattress we make is built firm. That’s not a limitation. It’s how a cotton mattress performs best, especially one that folds, flattens, and gets used in ways a regular mattress never would. If you
want a softer surface, the Eurotop adds a 2” GOLS-certified Dunlop latex comfort layer on top, which gives you pressure relief without changing the underlying structure.
The shikibuton is a different product for a different use. It’s a Japanese-style floor mattress, thinner by design, built for direct floor use. Some people use it every night. Others keep it rolled in a closet and pull it out when they need it. The Latex Shikibuton adds a GOLS-certified Dunlop latex core for more resilience than the all-cotton version. Both are available from Twin to Queen.
All futon mattresses and shikibutons ship across Canada. If you’re in Metro Vancouver, you’re welcome to come see them in the showroom.
FAQ
What is a futon mattress and how is it different from a regular mattress?
A futon mattress is built to fold with a futon frame, which means it needs a firm, dense construction that holds up to repeated use in two positions. Sleep Majestic futon mattresses are made from alternating layers of raw cotton batting and high-density foam, wrapped in wool for natural fire
protection. Unlike a standard latex or spring mattress, they work on futon frames, bunk beds, and platform bases. They are built firm by design, which suits back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and everyday adult use.
What is the difference between the Essential, Standard, and Eurotop futon mattresses?
The Essential is the most affordable option in the range, built from cotton batting and high-density foam in a firm profile suited to guest beds and bunk beds. The Standard uses the same construction but is thicker and is the firmest futon we make, suited to everyday adult use. The Eurotop is the softest of the three, with a 2” GOLS-certified Dunlop latex comfort layer sewn into the top above the cotton and foam base. The latex gives you surface pressure relief that the cotton-only futons do not have, making it the best option for side and back sleepers using a futon as a primary mattress.
What is a shikibuton and who is it for?
A shikibuton is a Japanese-style floor mattress, thinner than a futon mattress and designed for direct floor use. Sleep Majestic makes two versions: the Cotton Shikibuton, built entirely from raw cotton batting, and the Latex Shikibuton, which adds a GOLS-certified Dunlop latex core for more resilience and longevity. Both provide minimal cushioning and are suited to back and stomach sleepers. They work well as a primary floor mattress, a guest bed, or a kids mattress. Both are available from Twin to Queen.
Can a futon mattress be used for everyday sleeping?
Yes. The Standard and Eurotop futon mattresses are both suited to everyday adult use. The Eurotop is the better option for side and back sleepers who want surface comfort, as the latex comfort layer
provides pressure relief the cotton-only versions do not. Cotton futon mattresses compress over time with regular use, which is normal. Rolling and flipping the mattress regularly helps maintain even wear and loft. The Essential is better suited to guest bed or occasional use
What natural and organic materials are used in the futon mattresses?
All futon mattresses and shikibutons are made from raw cotton batting and a wool wrap for natural fire protection. The Eurotop Futon and Latex Shikibuton also contain GOLS-certified Dunlop latex, certified by GOLS, Eco-Institut, and Oeko-Tex. All futon mattresses contain some high-density foam, which is what gives them the structure to fold and hold up on a frame. The Shikibutons contain no synthetic foam.
Are futon mattresses good for everyday sleeping?
The Standard and Eurotop are both suited to everyday adult use. The Standard is the firmest option and works well for back and stomach sleepers who want a dense, supportive surface. The Eurotop is better for side and back sleepers because the latex comfort layer takes pressure off the shoulders and hips. Cotton futon mattresses compress with regular use over time, which is normal. Rolling and flipping the mattress regularly helps maintain even wear. The Essential is better suited to guest bed or occasional use rather than as a primary mattress.
What size futon mattresses do you carry?
All three futon mattresses are available in Twin, Twin XL, Double, and Queen. King and Cal King sizes are not available in the futon range. If you’re unsure which size fits your futon frame, the frame
manufacturer’s specs are the most reliable reference. Standard futon frames typically take a Full or Double mattress.
What frames are futon mattresses compatible with?
Futons require a slatted, breathable surface. This is most often found with futon frames, bunk beds, and platform bed frames. They are not compatible with solid foundations. They will eventuality mold on a solid surface. All three futon options are designed to fold with a futon frame.
Do Sleep Majestic futon mattresses contain latex?
The Essential and Standard futon mattresses do not contain latex. They are built entirely from alternating layers of raw cotton batting and high-density foam. The Eurotop Futon contains a 2” GOLS-certified Dunlop latex comfort layer sewn into the top, certified by GOLS, Eco-Institut, and
Oeko-Tex. If natural materials and latex certification are a priority for you, the Eurotop or the Latex Shikibuton are the products to look at in this range.
