Does the futon mattresses have an odour?

We use raw cotton batting, and some people will initially notice an earthly smell that goes away withing a few weeks.

What is the difference between the Cotton and Latex Shikibuton?

The Cotton Shikibuton is built entirely from raw cotton batting. It is the most affordable floor mattress we make and is Extra-Firm with minimal cushioning. The Latex Shikibuton adds a GOLS-certified Dunlop latex core, which gives it more resilience and a longer lifespan than the all-cotton version. The latex also provides slightly more surface response underfoot. Both are the same thickness and suited to back and stomach sleepers. If natural materials and latex certification are a priority, the Latex Shikibuton is the better choice.

Can a shikibuton be used as an everyday mattress?

Yes, though it depends on your sleeping position and preference for a firm surface. Both shikibutons provide minimal cushioning (the ground is your support base), which suits back and stomach sleepers who prefer a firmer sleep surface close to the floor. Side sleepers typically need more pressure relief than a shikibuton provides. If you sleep on your side and want a floor mattress, the Latex Shikibuton offers slightly more surface resilience than the cotton-only version. For everyday use with more cushioning, the Eurotop Futon is worth considering.

What sizes are shikibutons available in?

Both the Cotton and Latex Shikibuton are available in Twin, Twin XL, Double, and Queen. King and Cal King are not available. Shikibutons are designed for floor use and do not require a frame, so sizing is based on your preferred sleeping area rather than a frame specification.

What is a shikibuton and how is it different from a futon mattress?

A shikibuton is a Japanese-style floor mattress designed for direct floor use. It is thinner and firmer than a futon mattress and is not built to fold with a futon frame. A futon mattress is designed to work on a futon frame or slatted bed frame. A shikibuton is a dedicated floor sleeping surface, portable and easy to store when not in use. If you need a mattress for a futon frame, the futon mattress range is the right place to look.

Do I really need to roll the Shikibuton up nighty?

Yes. No exceptions. None.

What happens if i don't take my shikibtuon off the floor?

It will mould. 100% guarantee. The only question is time.

What if I use a tatamai mat?

Doesn't matter. A shikibuton is a thin mattress you roll and put away. Every day. Even in Japan. Even on tatami mats.
